Terms of Reference

1. Objective

The focus of the Southend Interfaith Working Group (SIWG) is to continue to develop effective working relationships between different faith and belief groups and the Council. It will take forward agreed actions by providing a strategic overview in relation to how faith communities support the wider community of Southend and provide appropriate advice support and direction to members of the Group.

2. Scope

SIWG shall be responsible for the following areas of activity:

i) To provide community leadership and delivery of an agreed action plan to further develop the relationship between local faith and belief communities, voluntary and community sector (VCS) and the Council.

ii) To identify areas of common interest and initiate opportunities for faith and belief communities in serving the wider community.  

iii) To support faith and belief based initiatives for the benefit of the wider communities that make up Southend.

iv) To review the Southend Interfaith Charter to make sure it is relevant and up to date.

v) To report on progress of work undertaken by the Group to the Leader of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Charter signatories.

vi) To make information available in the public domain relevant to the Group.

vii) To act as a conduit for faith and belief communities and the Council.

3) Membership

The membership of SIWG shall consist of Council representatives (Partnerships & Engagement Manager, community cohesion and admin support) and faith and belief community representatives.

The membership of the Group should be reviewed annually and aspires to representation from Southend’s main faith and belief communities.

SIWG arrangements

SIWG shall meet at least four times a year and more as the need arises. Each meeting shall have a structured agenda circulated in advance. The meetings shall be minuted and minutes circulated to all Group members, and posted on the SIWG website.
